Sleeping In

She was a good worker, but because she usually didn’t get to bed until late, she had trouble making it to work on time.

Her boss, the man-of-few-words John, would mention it once in a while, but it really wasn’t too much of a problem because she made up the five or ten minutes at the end of the day.  And they were two-thirds of a very small accounting area at the large truck manufacturer, so it wasn’t like she was being a bad example to alot of other employees.

But, one day, a miracle happened.  She made it to work on time … in fact, she was a few minutes early!

While she was sitting at her desk mentally patting herself on the back and receiving congratulations from her co-worker, the other accounting clerk, John walked through the door.  Both women were looking forward to the surprise they were sure they would see for once on the face of their very low-key boss.

John stopped dead in his tracks, but never even raised an eyebrow.  He just looked at his proud-of-herself employee, then at the clock, and then back again.  And then said, “What’s the matter … couldn’t sleep?”

This is one of my favorite “John” stories. Thanks for keeping it alive. 🙂

  2. Beth says:

    Ha!! I love that.

Did the sleepy employee’s name start with an “S”?

  3. Linda says:

Beth, I’m ashamed to say that Sleepy’s name began with an “L.”

Linda — Honestly I couldn’t remember which one of you it was who was always late. But, Hubby was SURE it was you who told him this story in the first person! I HATE it when he’s right! 🙂

p.s. You’ll notice I didn’t use any names, so that you didn’t have to ‘fess up to it if you didn’t want to.

Beth — I am SHOCKED you would think this was me. I might be alot of things, but one thing I have NEVER been is someone who sleeps in! That would be my friend, Linda. 🙂

  5. Hilary says:

Too funny. I was almost certain you were going to say that he moved the clock ahead by those few minutes, as it had to be running behind time.

  6. Beth says:

Ha!! What a good friend, to keep it anonymous.

Linda, I don’t like being an early riser either. 🙂

  7. Sandra says:

Hilary — That would have been a funny outcome too! Linda and I have told this story many times, because it always gets a laugh!

Beth — Thank you. Yes, I DO think it was very nice of me to let Linda tell on herself! 🙂

Gotta love a boss with a sense of humor 🙂
