. . . and me with no “umbrella”!
While driving through Chicago yesterday on I-90, within a five mile stretch of expressway near O’Hare and a five minute time span, we saw at least eight airplanes coming in for a landing … very impressive to see.
So it wasn’t an umbrella we needed, it was a camera. Oh, wait a minute, we had two.
So, we had two cameras, but if only we’d had a photographer to use them! Oh wait a minute, we had a “photographer.” But, unfortunately, not one good at taking pictures of objects moving through the sky, especially when she gets excited.
I won’t even bother to show you the dozen or so shots I took that I have examined thoroughly to see if I can find a plane a.n.y.w.h.e.r.e in them — no such luck. So, here are the two I did get, and you’ll just have to imagine that there were alot more!
Even this one almost got away. But I managed to snap him at the last minute.
It may have been my imagination, but I think this guy slowed down to “throw me a bone” and let me take his picture!
It was a lovely Sunday drive home anyway. And, I will keep practicing.

Update: One of my frequent commenters is Amy O. and she left a comment this morning that I want to add to this post because it is a touching reminder about when the planes didn’t fly.
She said, “. . . Before I became a Stay At Home Mom, I worked near O’Hare. My office overlooked I-90, which the planes used to line up to land. It was wonderful. It was noisy but you got used to it. There were times we had to stop conference calls because of the noise but wonderful. It was very eery after 9/11 when there were no planes flying; driving into work was strange without the traffic to O’Hare. When the first plane took off we all just watched.”
Thank you Amy, for reminding us all how “normal” can be truly appreciated in the context of a tragedy that makes life “not normal” for a while.

It was a beautiful Sunday. I hope your visit with DD was wonderful. Before I became a Stay At Home Mom, I worked near O’Hare. My Office overlooked I-90, the planes used that to line up to land. Sandra! I hope you’re doing well! I’m gald to see someone else in this world is fascinated with the simple things in life. It may because I was raised in a podunk town and graduated in a class of 22 people.
I remember I once rode up and down the escalators four times before I went to the rest of the mall of my then-classmates. All because I had never seen one before. (I think I was 16 at the time.)
Josh — I did the same thing the first time I saw an escalator. They really are kind of neat technology, especially the first time you see one! 🙂
I think you did a great job! Moving planes are difficult to get into focus, particularly when they’re that low.
I know exactly how Amy felt, as the silence was so eerie up here too. I live just a few miles from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. When the planes were grounded on the 11th, the silence was deafening. We usually have one fly overhead every 3 minutes or so and their absence was so obvious. I felt almost fearful of them when the resumed.. for a few days, anyway.

Re. the sudden stop of flights on 9/11. It is amazing how quickly, in a heartbeat, life can change as we know it. A good reason to “savor.”
