Three Competitive Men I Love

100_4837d  Gunny, Hubby and Jay

The men in our family are competitive, no doubt about it.  I can remember Gunny arm wrestling my dad and what a thrill it was for him the first time he beat his Grandpa.

Arm wrestling is sort of a family tradition — a right of passage for a young man.

100_4834f  So, it was inevitable that while we were there, an arm wrestling competition would break out between Jay and his Grandpa.

100_4835g   Jay is a strong young man, but it will take him years to beat Grandpa.

And Grandpa gave him an idea of how long he thinks it’s going to take Jay to beat him.

Jay said:  “I’ll beat you someday!”

Grandpa said:  “Yeah, you will.  But after you do, make sure they put my arm back in the casket before they close the lid.”

Competition isn’t the only thing we love — we also love a good punch line!

Welcome Back! I hope your vacation was very nice. At least, there was some good arm wrestling. Welcome Back Home to the cold!

  2. Linda says:

Welcome home! We missed you. UD felt bad about urging you to drive straight through, when the storm that had been forecast wound up bypassing us. Loved the pictures of the men in the family and the arm wrestling competition. I’ll bet Jay has already begun some strength training in preparation for his next visit with his grandpa.

  3. Hilary says:

Priceless! How could you not love that sense of humour? Welcome back. 🙂

  4. Sandra says:

Amy — Thank you. We are very happy to be home — cold or not!

Linda — Tell UD not to be sorry he suggested we drive straight through — we were soooo glad to get home and really didn’t have ANY snow on the roads until we literally pulled into our addition. Perfect! We just went to the gym and now the roads are really treacherous. Yes, Jay’s goal IS to beat Grandpa. But, Grandpa’s goal is to NOT let Jay (or anyone else) beat him, so I think Jay’s going to have to get quite a bit bigger and ALOT stronger to get the job done! 🙂

  5. Sandra says:

Hilary — It doesn’t surprise me that you especially enjoyed Hubby’s clever line. As they say, “It takes one to know one.” You certainly know how to turn a phrase too. 🙂

  6. Schafner says:

Awesome. That reminds me of my family. “Break ’em down so they can build themselves back up.” Always a great character builder 🙂

  7. chrissy says:

Love it! Too funny! This is an awesome memory!

  8. Debbie says:

Very handsome men in your family! What a fun memory. The story made me smile.

  9. karen says:

Welcome back !!! You were missed !!

Hope you had a great time. Looking at that photo, it seems you may have 🙂

I laughed at the punchline …. and yes, it definitely helps..

  10. Sandra says:

Schafner — Family traditions like this make for great memories.

Chrissy — I think so too!

Debbie — Thank you. Of course, I think they’re cute, so I appreciate you agreeing with me! I’m always amazed when Hubby comes up with a line like this because, frankly, I’ve always considered myself the witty one! 🙂

Thank you so much, Karen. It’s always a good feeling to be missed. We did have a great time, including lots of laughter, like after this punch line.

  11. Lyndsay says:

What a great story AND a great punchline 🙂

  12. Beth says:

Ha!!! I love people who can look at life and even death with a sense of humor!

Welcome home! Did you have a good trip?

  13. Sandra says:

Lyndsay — Thank you. I thought so too.

Beth — His sense of humor is just one of the many things I love about him.

We are glad to be home, but we had a wonderful time visiting with family. But two weeks was juuuuust about enough to be away — we really ARE homebodies. Have fun in Arizona with your parents!

  14. Is it me or has Gunny developed a case of “presidential hair”? This was a great post. However, try to remember that I am the funny one in this family.
    thank you.

  15. Sandra says:

Dear “Fun One” — I think you are experiencing the same shock I am/do — Gunny with hair. I still see him out of the corner of my eye once in a while and think, “Who’s that?” And then I realize — it’s my son WITH HAIR! I guess we can be forgiven for forgetting what it looks like since we didn’t see it hardly at all for 20 years.

And, thank you for your concern regarding Jenny-less frivolity. It has been noted, and we promise to try not to be funny or have ANY fun in the future without you.

    Love, Mom

  16. Chourou says:

How hundsome they are! Your hubby is very nice. Looks like the king of armwrestler.

Thank you very much for your hearty comment you left my blog right after coming back from vacation. Bless you and your family.

  17. Sandra says:

Chourou — Yes, hubby is the king of arm wrestling — very strong! 🙂

  18. What fun this post is! And what love flows through your family. The punchline about the casket is priceless. Sounds like something my hubby would say to any challengers 😉

  19. Sandra says:

Lynn — Then I guess you love a good punch line too. It definitely makes marriage more fun, doesn’t it! 🙂
