I was a little surprised at how touched I was to be standing in a spot where George Washington probably stood and looking at the same view he would have enjoyed … and what a beautiful, peaceful view it is.
He owned enough land that he would have had innumerable spots he could have chosen to build his house, but I can’t imagine that this wasn’t the clear favorite if nothing else because of the view.
What an admirable and interesting man … and an interesting place. Maybe when he was fighting a war and then governing a new nation and had to be away from home for long periods of time, his memory of this peaceful home and this beautiful view gave him a few moments of peace.
I’ve just started reading a biography of George Washington. This visit to his home has made me want to know more about him than what we learned from history books in school.
These are beautiful photos. I can only imagine how it must have felt to be standing on such a historic spot.
It really was touching, Linda.
What biography did you choose on Washington, Sandra? I’ve been thinking I want to read up on American History this summer–I’m even thinking I will finish up my degree in History–now that I am old enough that it would be FREE!9+69 That’s one of my big regrets in life! Life and raising kids and taking care of my mom just caught up with me. You can’t “do everything”–at least do everything well I found. Have you read any of David McCullough’s biographies? They are on my list too! Ben Franklin is interesting too!
I, too, enjoy history more nowadays
I’d enjoy that scene, too.
This reminds me a a funny video I watched yesterday about a toddler boy who was crying in the back seat of his mom’s vehicle, just sobbing about never having met George Washington!haha
It’s great to “see” you, Sandra
Hope all is well with you.
V — I don’t read much history, but after seeing Mt. Vernon I really wanted to know more about our first president. So I’m reading Washington, A Life by Ron Chernow. I have to admit I’m not very far into it, because book club books get in the way. But I’m going to stay at it. Good luck with getting your degree — you’re never too old to accomplish a goal. Good for you!
Mrs4444 — It’s so nice to hear from you!! Hope all is well. Why is it that videos of kids are always so entertaining? I guess because they don’t KNOW how funny they are being.
